Our approach

Our approach

In creating opportunities for all, we make long-term investments, cultivate an active civil society, and build high-quality institutions.

In creating opportunities for all, we make long-term investments, cultivate an active civil society, and build high-quality institutions.

We break the cycle of poverty by investing in all three areas at the same time and in the same place for the greatest impact. Together they transform societies and meaningful, lasting change can occur. Working with our partners we invest in innovative programmes that ensure self-reliance and are integrated across sectors and across borders.

The interdependence of our approach is depicted in the below graphic. All our projects are building blocks for positive change that endures after the funding ends. The Aga Khan Foundation weaves together projects with a long-term outlook, going beyond the life-cycle of funding so that local institutions are permanent and civil society thrives for generations to come. Our approach to improving quality of life is focused on:

  • Making long-term investments in areas like education, health, stable livelihoods, reliable markets, and financial inclusion. With the opportunity that this provides people shape their own future, build their own enterprises and become self-reliant.
  • Cultivating an active civil society that promotes good governance and social services, encourages local philanthropy, and protects marginalised groups. Rooted in local knowledge and ownership, people begin can realise their potential and drive change in their communities.
  • Building permanent institutions such as hospitals, universities, academies, micro-finance banks and other permanent institutions to anchor communities so societies may thrive.

Our vision is to build a better future together.
