Events overview

Over the coming year, we will be organising a series of talks and events in collaboration with our institutional and community partners, bringing you closer than ever to the work of the Aga Khan Foundation and the broader Aga Khan Development Network.

Empowering India’s Women: A self-help movement through savings, entrepreneurship and access to key services

Thursday 23rd February 2017: Tinni Sawhney, CEO of Aga Khan Foundation India, in conversation with Matt Reed, CEO AKF(UK), discussed how the Foundation is enhancing womens’ financial security, improving incomes and promoting safe sanitation that provides both dignity and security.

AKDN and J&J: Partnering for 15 years to improve the quality of life and human health

Thursday 22nd September 2016: For more than 15 years, the Aga Khan Development Network and the Johnson & Johnson Corporate Citizenship Trust have worked in partnership to improve the quality of life and human health for those most in need.

Jane Griffiths, Johnson & Johnson Corporate Citizenship Trust, and Professor Sharon Brownie, Aga Khan University, discussed the principles of the wider partnership with a focus on what we are doing together to improve and enrich the practice of nursing in East Africa in order to address that region’s most pressing health challenges.

University of Central Asia: Creating opportunity on the roof of the world

Friday 20th May 2016: Ahead of the launch of the first undergraduate campus in September, Shamsh Kassim-Lakha, Executive Chairman, UCA Board Executive Committee, gave a talk in London about the role the University is playing in Central Asia’s current and future development.

Gulnara Kasmambetova, Senior Producer for BBC Kyrgyz, presented a feature piece produced by the BBC about UCA and led a discussion with Shamsh.

Women and the future of Afghanistan

Thursday 3rd March 2016: To mark International Women’s Day, Nurjehan Mawani C.M., Diplomatic Representative, Aga Khan Development Network, Afghanistan discussed how the AKDN is helping to shape a stronger Afghanistan by placing inclusivity and women’s participation at the heart of its endeavours.

Shireen Rahmani, HR Director, Roshan Telecom Development Company Afghanistan then shared insights about professional life for women in Afghanistan, and how she became a director at one of its leading corporations.

Meena Baktash, Head of the BBC Afghan Service, joined the conversation to explore further the role of women in modern day Afghanistan.

Breaking the cycle of poverty

Thursday 26th November 2015: In the first of a series of Aga Khan Foundation talks in the UK, Michael Kocher, who overseas AKF’s global operations, spoke at the Ismaili Centre in London about the Foundation’s commitment to breaking the cycle of poverty. Michael provided insights into today’s development challenges and outlined how AKF is working to address these.

Sheila Manji, AKF Early Childhood Development Specialist, spoke also on the essential role that good nutrition, childcare and education plays in giving a child a great start in life.
