The Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) is a private development agency committed to supporting disadvantaged communities irrespective of gender, ethnicity, religion or language. Its mission is to promote creative and effective solutions to problems that impede social development, primarily in Asia and East Africa.
In every undertaking by the Foundation, the underpinning goals are:

To provide opportunities for disadvantaged people to act in ways that will lead to long-term improvements in their income, health, the education of their children, and the sustainability of their environment;

To provide communities with a greater range of choices and the understanding necessary to take informed action;

To enable beneficiaries to gain the confidence and competence to participate in the design, implementation and continuing operation of programme activities;

To establish institutional, management and financial structures that ensure that programme activities become sustainable;

AKF operates on the principle that effective social and economic progress is based on partnership - with individuals, communities, businesses, governments and other academic and research institutions. Recipients of grants commit themselves totally to solving their own problems with AKF operating as a broker to bring together the necessary resources and expertise to help these communities.

Recognising that to be effective it must focus on selected areas of development, AKF concentrates on four key areas:

Rural development
Education
Health
NGO Enhancement

One of the Aga Khan Foundation's strengths is its membership in the Aga Khan Development Network, a group of institutions working to improve living conditions and opportunities in specific regions of the developing world. The Network's institutions have individual mandates that range from the fields of health and education to architecture, rural development and the promotion of private sector enterprise. Together they collaborate in working toward a common goal - building institutions and programmes flat can respond to the challenges of social, economic and cultural change.
